Black rhino
- The black rhino is more solitary than the white rhino
- The white rhino can weigh up to 1.5 tonnes
- The white rhino is part of the group of animals most threatened with extinction – there are only a few thousand left – humans are their biggest threat
- The black rhino is actually dark grey in colour and tends to take on the colour of the ground where it lives due to its habit of wallowing in mud after bathing
- Although the black rhino looks heavy and slow it is very agile and can make sharp turns even when running at their top speed of 31 miles per hour
- Black rhinos do not see very well and can sometimes be seen charging trees or rocks which they have mistaken as threats. Their sense of hearing and smell is excellent
- Black rhinos do have a softer side. The females are very good mothers and their young stay with them for years usually until a sibling is born
